62 Year Old Yeren Researcher Shares The Secret To Finding The Legendary Creature

In a recent article by Wang Xiaodong in China Daily, 62 year old Li Guohua, Yeren researcher for over three decades, shares the secret to finding the legendary "Wild Man" of the mountains of Shennongjia. Having dedicated almost half his life to finding the creature, he was rewarded with an unforgettable encounter and several sightings.

According to Li, "To find a Wildman, you have to become a Wildman first. Like wild animals, the Wildman's senses are more acute than human beings and they can easily detect an approaching person."

Li often scoffs at teams of scientists who undertake expeditions to find the creature from time to time saying, "These guys will never find anything new like a Wildman as they make too much noise, even if they are well equipped. To find a Wildman, you have to live in the mountains and merge with nature."

"Merging with nature" has been Li's practice for 30 years and it seems to have paid off for him as he claims to have had several sightings of the creature and one memorable encounter.

Li's encounter:

"It was the moment that I can never forget," he says of his first encounter with the beast, on Feb 28, 1980. The Wildman appeared to be chasing him, Li says, possibly because it thought he was prey.

"I hid behind some trees and tried hard to contain my violently beating heart, closing my eyes for a while hoping I could see it more clearly later," he says.

As the creature came nearer, he could see clearly it resembled both a man and an ape. It was about 2.6 meters tall, with red hair all over its body, no tail, two arms waving as it walked like a man. He was horrified but even so aimed his gun and pulled the trigger. But it failed to fire, as the charge was damp. He did not have a camera. The creature turned around and ran swiftly toward a bamboo forest.

"Seeing the creature disappear, I collapsed on the snowy ground."

Unfortunately, Li has no proof of his claims

"Although I have seen the Wildman several times, I couldn't record it because it escaped too fast, and I didn't have a good camera to record faraway objects. Besides, it is too exhausting for a single man to search in such a large area."

"I hope I can find a sponsor and some volunteers so that I can continue with the search," Li says. "I have devoted all my life to the search and I hope I can put an end to this mystery so that I can be relieved before the end of my life."

Li has published a book about his experiences and continues to follow up on sighting reports in his research area. To read more about Li and his story, click on the link below.

  1. lol. 'dedeicated half his life to searching for the yeren' and' shares his secrets to finding the yeren'. wtf! he has zero evidence/photos film dna etc.. like evryone else. spending half your life walking about forests and having zero evidence apart from a few eye witness testimony is worthless. It could easily be argues he is lying! he is wrong it was natural optical illusions, he wanted a bear to be so badly a yeren that was what his eyes saw. Eitherway he has no proof so doesnt qualify as an expert in 'finding yeren'. harsh but true.
yes he is an expert wildife person in that region and outdoorsman. It a long leap to beibng an 'expert' in a unknown biped! nonsense as per

  8. First of all this short story contains very little of his body of work, Secondly running around Communist China looking for this creature has to be approved by the State, Lying to the State about your findings is frowned upon, Often times resulting in "Lead Poisoning" I lean towards him being the real deal, You can be a crazy bastage in Oregon and its cool, Being crazy in Communist China it isnt, Your locked away until they find sutible matches for your organs, Kel @ Kelly Outdoors Radio
