Dr. Bryan Sykes: Yeti Is a Polar Bear / Brown Bear Hybrid?

Last year, it was reported that Dr. Bryan Sykes may have solved the Yeti mystery through DNA. His initial theory was that the "Yeti" people reported about may have been an escaped American Black bear. After months of DNA testing, Sykes has concluded that the "Yeti" is probably a sub species of brown bear in the High Himalayas descended from the bear that was the ancestor of the polar bear. In a new report from www.independent.co.uk, Sykes also had "Yeti" samples that had a 100 percent match from an ancient polar bear jawbone dated back 40,000 years ago:

Bryan Sykes, professor of human genetics at the Oxford University, set out to collect and test “yeti” hair samples to find out which species they came from. In particular he analysed hairs from two unknown animals, one found in the Western Himalayan region of Ladakh and the other from Bhutan, 800 miles to the east.

After subjecting the hairs to the most advanced DNA tests available and comparing the results to other animals' genomes stored on the GenBank database, Professor Sykes found that he had a 100 per cent match with a sample from an ancient polar bear jawbone found in Svalbard, Norway, that dates back at least 40,000 years - and probably around 120,000 years - a time when the polar bear and closely related brown bear were separating as different species.

Professor Sykes believes that the most likely explanation is that the animals are hybrids - crosses between polar bears and brown bears. The species are closely related and are known to interbreed where their territories overlap.

Now that the "Yeti" mystery has been "solved", it will be interesting to see what Sykes has in store when his investigation titled, "Bigfoot Files", starts airing this Sunday. According to Bigfoot researcher Todd Neiss, "things are about to get very interesting":

After meeting with Dr Sikes for several hours (including dinner afterward) I can assure you that he does have a number of serious revelations to share. Some have to do with the origins of "Zena" (of Russian lore), his DNA analysis of over 50 specimens he has acquired from numerous sources around the world (including some rare museum relics), and some controversial findings regarding "other" studies underway. That's about all I am allowed to divulge at this time. Suffice to say, things are about to get very interesting. - Todd Neiss

What is happening with the Independent? This article was false and Sykes and Co. shut it down?

  4. "Found to match a GenBank record of DNA from a jawbone of an ancient polar bear? Oh really? Exactly who extracted that jawbone from the polar bear, in order to confirm that it was in fact a polar bear? Well, er, I guess nobody did since modern educated man was not alive 40,000 to 120,000 years ago, nor was a full skeleton available. We were just guessing based on the process of elimination of the animal species that we were given by science to choose from. Yeti wasn't one of the species that we were allowed to choose from.

Perhaps, GenBank already has the DNA of a Yeti, and is was misclassified as that of an ancient polar bear since there was no other way that GenBank would accept it! And now, Sykes fell into the misclassification trap that was set for whomever was brave enough to run DNA on a Yeti.

Bigfoot is plausible with or without the yeti..The idea cannot be dismissed out of hand on first principles or by any set of scientific facts...The existence of the yeti does give us another candidate for what people may be seeing here--I.e descendents of yeti's that crossed the straight....

Confirmation of the yeti would also be a big modern victory for cryptozoology. We would see it recognized as a legitimate interdisciplinary subject and eventually formalized...

Sighs...not looking good, and I was looking forward to watching on Sunday.

  34. Ok. I just read thorough it. I covered up. Took the beating like a man. It was about like pistol whipping a blind kid. Poor Joe. Sitting in his pajamas with his defunct YouTube channel while you guys drown him. Still. Many of you are pretty damn funny and talented. You deserve your moment and this was it. I drank the Kool Aid too. It was fun though. Admit it. You guys all let loose and you should do it more often. When Sykes publishes. If he rules on the Bigfoot question completely in the negative ill bow down to Campbell. Man I made the bet. Whether it was nullified by the series of scuffles or bans that followed or not no one deserved to be banned worse than me. Thank you for all your abuse this evening. As a Footer. I deserve it. M

  35. All this is saying is he identified an ancient bear species through a sample. A 100% match of that for a sample doesnt mean the Yeti is a bear. Just means one of the samples, was bear.

  36. In think that it is hilarious that the Yeti is already in GenBank, but it was misidentified as an ancient polar bear. Egg on face to the scientists who attempted to keep Yeti and Bigfoot out of GenBank.

  38. So wait, they found miscellaneous hair that was "suspected" of being from a yeti, did a dna test found it matched a hybrid bear and that disproves the yeti as a hominid how? From what I can tell it proves there's a hybrid bear lumbering about. Last I heard lumbering bears left bear tracks didn't walk long distances on two feet, and don't really look hominid...

I mean polar bears and brown bears still exist and hybrids occur right? Is it not completely possible a polar bear got it on with a brown bear and at the same time Yeti's as a completely non bear entity still exist, and this hair was simply misidentified as having come from a yeti?

Am I missing something here? What's going on? How does this disprove the yeti?
